Artist:  KALIN LUY KEN
Biography:  Kalin Luy Ken was born in Nasca, Peru on May 3rd. Son of two great cultures, Chinese and Peruvian. Nasca was his native home, one of the most remarkable ancient Pre-Colombian cultures. Noted internationally for its ceramics, it is also the home of the famous and mysterious Nasca Lines, it was declared by UNESCO as a “Cultural Patrimony of Humanity”.

Kalin, enjoyed reading, drawing and started painting on large format canvases in 1980. His work Sunset in Manhattan, with angel creatures; The Banishment of Adam and Eve, sinuous free chained figures released on flying birds suggest a growing oneirism, freedom and guilt of his hidden demons.

Kalin started to study law at the “Universidad San Luis Gonzaga” in Ica, Peru; but unable to finished at that time, he must moved to Lima, Peru due to a physical, social and emotional crisis and after two years, Kalin become a Guillain-Barre Syndrome survivor. He began a journey into the deep Peru (Mountain and Jungle). During that period accumulated experiences in agriculture and farming, approaching a more humble social stratum forgotten by political governance.

In 1994, Kalin returned to Nasca attracted by the gold rush, started mining as a medium producer of copper and gold, experienced the metallurgy which suffers losses resulting from the earthquake that devastated the Nasca City.

In 1996, Kalin participated on the Peruvian Chinese School reconstruction becoming the President of the board of directors. At that time, Kalin reached a piece of wood that was originally a “holly monk” those statues that adorned the churches of the Spanish Jesuits that probably dated back to 1800; Kalin transformed that monk into an Indian noble; so he carved his intrinsic protest, took it to a museum achieving popular acceptance, there came his love for the sculpture activity.

Kalin Luy Ken is an artist whose school is life itself, eyewitness of multiple events, self-taught, shifting realities on the plastic.

His works range in scale from small tabletop pieces to some of the largest contemporary metal sculptures which grace public in the Peruvian towns of Marcona and Nasca.

Statement:  My conception of art was born as a necessity to begin a vital and deep dialogue with the observer. I am among those who somehow take a traditional look of the sculpture and the nourishment of multiple possibilities in interpreting the human soul with its passions, flirtations and suffering.

Sculptor of realities, pleasures, feelings of guilt, the nature and fate, wanting to protect and heal the wounds of the environment uttered by man, blending a perfect binomial, man and nature.

Since my roots are from China I am very pleased to combine Asia and America cultures.
